CHAPTER 1- THE STUDY OF LIFE
___________________: Study of living and once-living things
___________________: A person who studies living and once-living things.
People use biology in their everyday lives. ____________________ is used in science to
solve everyday problems. Technology, including computers, is used to make artificial
hearts, and to find genetic sequences.
Careers in Science
_______________________ Uses a microscope to study hair, fibers, skin & blood
_______________________ Must know where to place beehives to get the most honey
_______________________ Must choose the best soil for a good crop
_______________________ Has studied eyes and knows how they work
Scientific Method
Scientists (and everyday people!) use a series of several steps to solve a problem. This is called the Scientific Method.
Steps of the Scientific Method:
_________________ The factor being tested (causes changes in an experiment)
_________________ The experiment with the variable left out (used as a comparison)
_________________________ - Numbers (measurements, amounts)
_________________________ - Distinguishing characteristics (color, shape, texture)
Tools of Biology
(Also refer to Microscope Diagram)Microscopes are primarily used in biology to magnify things. There are several types of Microscopes:
__________________ lens: 10X magnification
__________________lens: Low Power = ______X magnification
High Power = ______X magnification
Total Magnification = (Eyepiece Lens) X (Objective Lens)
Uses beams of electrons to magnify objects, which are
viewed on a monitor.
Advantage: Can magnify up to ________________ X
Disadvantages: Cannot view objects in color, dyes are expensive, need skill & training
Measurements in Biology
_____________________________________________ (SI Units, or the Metric System):
Measuring system based on units of 10, used universally for scientific measurements.
To Measure___ of an Object . | Use this SI Unit: | What does this measure? | How To Measure/ Miscellaneous |
Length |
|
How long something is | Use a Ruler |
Volume |
|
Amount of space something occupies | V = L x W x H |
Weight | Force of gravity on an object | Changes with atmosphere (earth/ moon) Use balance
Mass | Amount of matter inside an object | Doesnt change with atmosphere Use a balance
Temperature | Amount of heat in something | F = 1.8(C) + 32 (Scientists use Celcius) Boiling Point of water - 100 ° C |
When moving to the ______________ with conversion factors, move your decimal point to the ______________ the same number of conversion factors you are moving.
Example: When converting from meters to kilometers, you are you are moving 3 conversion factors to the left. So, move your decimal point 3 places to the left: 2.0 m = 0.002 km. Now fill in the table:
